hollenator, thanks for the solidarity.

each time things like this happen, i'm always shocked at how little time and effort it takes. it makes me wonder what would happen if i went out of my way to find these opportunities, or devoted more time to it.

it's not measurable. it's not quantifiable. I can't make it into a pie chart, but I think it's a sign that my capacity to love is growing bit by bit.

this also makes me wonder what the appropriate metrics are for churches. bodies, bucks and buildings are all very sexy. but that's not where the nitty gritty, faith-in-action things tend to take place. someone correct me if i'm way off base here. it just seems that being out in the world is where it's at.

I saw this on your facebook/twitter the other day and was hoping for the extended story. It reminds me a lot of your lunch on the median with the homeless guy.

Thanks for doing what you do. :)

"The soul of the artist cannot remain hidden."- Henri Nouwen

The most renowned theologian of our era, a man named Stanley Hauerwas once spoke about the fact that we as Christians have something to say because we are precisely that, Christians.

What would happen if the good news permeated our very being?
What would happen if we were filled with the creative life giving energy of the Holy Spirit?
What would happen if we loved God with our heart, soul and mind?

The words could not contain themselves... our souls could not contain themselves... life would have to be consciously stopped in order for the words to stop.

As st. Francis once explained "preach the gospel at all times and when necessary, use words." Our life is our message. If we live, if we truly live, then the words will spill out.

You're most welcome, Jess.

I would venture to say, from an artist's perspective, the process is the product. Would you agree? We artists thrive in the gathering and assembly of the raw materials.

I always think it's so fascinating to have a peek into someone's creative process...the cool thing about ideas is that they are unique to each imagination.

And no matter what the final product, the process will always bring inspiration to others.

Thanks for giving us a peek into your creative mind :)

Thanks for the support, Jess.

One guy I recently discovered when Micah and I visited Ecclesia in Houston, TX is an artist named Scott Erickson.

http://www.scottericksonart.com/

His art creates a motif for people to reflect and be engaged on an entirely different level. He paints live art during Ecclesia's gatherings. He unpacks what it looks like to incorporate live art in one of his most recent blog posts: http://createvisualculture.wordpress.com/2010/11/08/overcoming-the-neat-wall/

As an artist, he obviously brings his own sense of self into his creation, but he also reflects Ecclesia's identity with the intent to create something that engages the creative community beyond Ecclesia. Brilliant.

You raise some really thought-provoking questions, Tof...ones that most definitely need to be asked.

Jesus was a radical dude...he wasn't afraid to be challenging. I think people are sick of hearing the same church jargon they've heard for decades...maybe it's about time we start telling them about the way JESUS saw things.

Thanks for your thoughts, brother. Keep writing.

Right on. Thanks for expounding on the thought here. How often do we settle for a "borrowed story" that we can get on sale? I like that you reframed it in terms of our consumer driven society. Lately, I've been hearing from some pretty smart people that 21st century Americans are the most under-reflective people in all recorded history (how they came to that definitive conclusion, I'm not sure, but it sure rings true). It makes me wonder if contentment and reflection aren't somehow inextricably bound together. I know my appetite for "stuff" goes down when I clear out some time to ponder. How about you?
